Calendar 0.85

I'm running out of numbers here. :)

Here's an update to the previous chapter, Calendar, that adds over ten new screenshots as well as some edits and small additions. The only thing left, screenshot- (and possibly content-) wise, is the Facebook section, and when that's done, I'll consider the chapter a near-final version 0.9. Which is arbitrary, but whatever.

Given the length of this chapter--about 45 pages in Word now, and probably close to 50 when it's done--I may need to think about cutting back here and there, and cropping and/or shrinking the images. I wasn't hoping for a 1000 page book here.

I hope to make more progress on Search and Maps tomorrow too.

From the opening paragraphs of this chapter, it seems that the WP8 calendar app will not sync locally with Outlook. Can you confirm this? I haven't seen any news or rumors that count this out for the new phone. Do you have some inside information or understanding of this feature, or is this an assumption based on what WP7 does?

Calendar has never synced with Outlook, and it won't in Windows Phone 8, yes. Windows Phone is designed to be used with online data sources, not PC-based data. (There are a few exceptions in Windows Phone 7.x--videos, for example, and you need to connect to the PC to transfer full-resolution pictures off the devices--but these are all being eliminated in Windows Phone 8.) All the productivity apps--Mail, etc.--work this way too.

Thanks.

Paul. Two questions.

Calendar Search. Is there a way to search for past or future events in WP8? For example, say I know I have an appointment with Paul Thurrott at some point in the future but cannot remember when; is there a way to find it other than going through the calendar one day at a time? Alternatively, will there be a “universal search” feature in WP8?

Birthday Calendars. This is probably as much a Hotmail issue as a WP issue (but impacts WP anyway); are you aware that many people are finding that birthdays entered into the People hub of Hotmail appear in the calendar of Hotmail/WP7.5 incorrectly? For me, some birthdays appear correctly, but many appear one day early. This has been raised by others on Microsoft Answers but with no resolution (it is not time zone issue for me).

I want to be all-in with WP, Windows 8, Hotmail etc, but these basic issues are a real annoyance.

Hi Paul,

Very disappointing that Microsoft did not implement categories for tasks in Windows Phone / Outlook.com. This makes the whole thing useless for anybody who applies any form of GTD and forces us to rely on third party services, which are clumsy, slow and unreliable on WP7 and will probably be the same on WP8. It is so obvious I don't see how they could miss this improvement.

Well I was so irritated that I missed the obvious : we are talking about the book here, not the product. Well them may I suggest that you include a paragraph in the Calendar / To-do chapter about a possible workaround / 3rd party Tools to assign tasks to categories ? Thank you very much.

Like Rambaldi, can you cover off Categories in Tasks please.
